Our Division Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Division
The Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Planning Division represents planners who work to reduce disaster risk and support communities as they recovery from disaster events, no matter the size. We foster professional development, skill-building, communications about how to plan before, during, and after disasters.Â
Join the Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Planning Division (HMDR)

Anyone or any organization interested in hazard mitigation or disaster recovery planning may join the Division. We have a broad and diverse membership across sectors, geographies, and demographics—including planners from all 50 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and 25 other nations.
Interested individuals can join the Division even if they are not APA members. By paying dues, individuals receive full membership services, though voting on Division business is reserved for paying APA members.
How to Join
1. For Current APA Members
- During Online Renewal: When renewing your APA membership online, you will be prompted to select your included Division as well as any additional Divisions you wish to add to your profile.
2. For Non-APA Members
If you are not currently an APA member, you can still join our specialized community through two pathways:
- Division-Only Membership: Complete the official Division-Only Membership Form to join our division directly.
- Full APA Membership: Join the American Planning Association as a full member and add our division membership during registration.
